Six Sigma and its Importance:

Six sigma is known as a set of management techniques which helps in improving the businesses. It reduces the chances that a defect will occur. The importance of six sigma is increasing these days as it intends to reduce errors. By using six sigma techniques, the employees are able to identify the problems in the projects and solve them before the final outcome.

Advantages of six sigma methodology

There are many advantages of using six sigma methodologies. The very first advantage is that six sigma focuses on the customers completely. The defect ratio of six sigma is 3.4 defects per one million products. Six Sigma takes a close look at the entire processing behind the product. The six sigma can be considered as proactive and not reactive because it takes care of doing all the improvements before faults are found either by the customers or by other parts of the entire process behind the product.

Another advantage for six sigma is considered to be very helpful for the small businesses. When you have a six sigma certification, it will make you stand out among all the competitors within the industry. Six sigma acts as warranties of businesses for the customers of B2B customers as it is necessary to know that there is a standard for manufacturing their products respectively. Even if the business is small, it is necessary to know there is someone who has been trained in six sigma and in proactivity philosophy and also in the customer satisfaction approach for the company. One more advantage of six sigma is that it can be easily implemented in many categories within a business. And its impact will be directly on profitability and reduction in the cost of the business as the methodology is very much focused on improving the defect parts in the process before the final outcome.

Disadvantages of Six Sigma Methodology

Six sigma is known as a very effective methodology which improves the businesses, but it is true that it also brings problems to the organization. The very first disadvantage of six sigma is it surely creates excellent bureaucracy and rigidity as the methodology covers all the process of the company, but in turn, it leads to problems in creativity. Another disadvantage of six sigma happens to be when six sigma is taken to the extreme problems can arise as the companies tend to favour policies that only follow six sigma methodology. And most importantly, they forget about policies that can only be applicable to their own companies.

Sometimes when a company chooses to follow the six sigma methodology and to apply a very expensive measure instead of going for an inexpensive measure which is actually needed in the business creates a problem right there. The companies should not go for such expensive measures unnecessarily. Another big disadvantage is for small businesses. When small businesses apply six sigma, it will be much expensive for them to implement it. And the main cause of such expensive cost is training. For this, the companies need to find some certified six sigma institutes to get their training. Also, they can do the training in the house without any formal certification. So, it becomes a huge disadvantage for the small business firms as the cost to implement six sigma is too high for them, and a lot of training is needed for the same.

Six sigma proves to be a very useful technique in business. It has several advantages and well as disadvantages, but still, it has a lot of benefits like career advancement, standardization and most importantly, it has an excellent salary. People should go for this as a career as it also has applicability across industries.
