How To Keep Mosquitoes Away From Your Campsite

Camping is all fun and games until mosquitoes come along to ruin everything. While you cannot get rid of them entirely, you can use everything in your arsenal to keep them at bay. Learn how to keep mosquitoes away from your campsite so that your family can enjoy the vacation a little bit more.

Wear Protective Gear

Mosquitoes prefer to come out when there is little sunlight and the temperature isn’t too hot. Wear protective clothing in the early morning and night to place a barrier between your skin and mosquitoes. Some may still find their mark, but wearing long sleeves and covering your skin can keep the bites to a minimum.

Use Unscented Products

Floral soaps, body sprays, shampoos, and lotions attract more mosquitoes than you realize. When you’re out in the wilderness, use unscented products to ward off mosquitoes.

Use Mosquito Repellant

If you find yourself on a campsite with a lot of standing water, you may have an issue with mosquitoes. If possible, move to a dry campsite that is not near a body of water. Otherwise, use mosquito spray and wristbands to repel mosquitoes from your body.

Cover Doors and Windows

If you like to leave the door to your camper open, consider using an RV bug screen to keep the bugs outside. Keep all doors and windows closed unless you have screens over them to keep bugs out. This still allows natural air to make its way inside while protecting the space from bugs.

Burn Citronella Candles

A citronella candle is a regular candle with generous amounts of citronella, an essential oil. The scent of these candles will minimize the mosquitoes gathering at your campsite.

Start a Campfire

The smoke you create with your campfire will help keep the bugs away. Generally, if you’re camping, you already have plans to build a campfire every night, which can help keep those annoying insects away.

Now that you have all the tools to keep mosquitoes away from your campsite, you can enjoy your vacation more. Nobody likes dealing with mosquitoes, but if you’re new to camping, there is no way around them. If all else fails and the campsite is still bustling with them, consider using a fog machine to kill off as many mosquitoes as possible.
